Richmond Merchants Association's Ninth Gala Dinner Concludes Successfully

The Ninth Gala Dinner of the Richmond Merchants Association was successfully held on May 15, 2026, at Neptune Palace Seafood Restaurant in Vancouver. The evening brought together government representatives, business leaders, community members, guests from the film and television sector, and friends from across the community. The event concluded in a lively, warm, and harmonious atmosphere.
Representatives of the host organization in attendance included Mr. Sunny Ho, President of the Richmond Merchants Association; Mr. Wen Shi Guan, Vice President; Mr. Gen Wong, Executive Director and Spokesperson; Mr. William Tse, Director and Secretary-General; and the Association's legal advisors, Mr. Richard Lee and Ms. Vivian Chung.
Many distinguished guests attended the event, including Mr. Paul Vincent L. Uy, Deputy Consul General of the Philippine Consulate General; Ms. Joyce Lau, Principal Consultant of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Vancouver Liaison Office (Western Canada), Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr. Don Davies, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway; Mr. Chak Au, Member of Parliament for Richmond Centre-Marpole; Mr. George Chow, Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for Vancouver-Fraserview; Richmond City Councillors Ms. Alexa Loo and Mr. Andy Hobbs; and Burnaby City Councillors Mr. Richard Lee and Mr. James Wang, among others.
Business community guests included Mr. Caihua Yang, Head of Bank of China in British Columbia; Mr. Ben Zhang, Deputy Branch Manager of Bank of China Richmond Branch; Mr. Xie Yan, Client Manager of Bank of China Richmond Branch; Mr. Yeo Sing Lim, former Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation; Ms. Lauren Liang, Partner at Clark Wilson LLP; Mr. Jonathan Do, Vice President, Commercial Financial Services at RBC; and accountant Mr. Alvin Chui.
Other guests in attendance included Ms. Jia Wang, Senior Fellow of the China Institute at the University of Alberta; Ms. Laura Clarke, Program Director of Pathways Clubhouse; and representatives from the Vancouver film and television community, including Permanent Honorary President Elaine Chow, former President Mimi Chan, Sandra Lang, Deborah Moore, Ho Wood Kuen, Canede, Alex Tin, Bryan Leung, Eileen Fong, Travena Lee, Agnes Lui, Jensen Tse, Judy, and others.
The gala dinner was emceed by Mr. Kenneth Ho and Ms. Teresa Ho. With their smooth and warm hosting style, the two masters of ceremonies guided the evening's program seamlessly and added a lively and heartwarming atmosphere to the event.
The event opened with Mr. Cameron, a representative of Pathways Clubhouse, leading the singing of the Canadian national anthem. Ms. Laura Clarke, Program Director of Pathways Clubhouse, then delivered remarks introducing the Clubhouse's support services for people recovering from mental health challenges.
Ms. Clarke noted that, in Canada, one in every three people will experience a mental health challenge at some point in their lives. People facing mental health challenges are members of the community: they may be people we meet at the supermarket, our neighbours, friends, family members, or even ourselves. When a person is facing hardship, appropriate support can often bring about meaningful and positive change.
She explained that Pathways Clubhouse values the abilities and strengths of its members and provides support according to each member's circumstances. Through its transitional employment program, the Clubhouse offers low-barrier and supportive employment opportunities, helping members receive training, return to the workforce, gain work experience, rebuild confidence, and reintegrate into community life.
Ms. Clarke emphasized that people living with mental health challenges can contribute to the community in meaningful and positive ways. During the event, Pathways Clubhouse also presented a video introducing its transitional employment project in partnership with the Richmond Food Bank, allowing guests to gain a more concrete understanding of how members serve and give back to the community through practical work.
Following this, Mr. Sunny Ho, head of Kam Do Bakery and President of the Richmond Merchants Association, conducted a donation ceremony on behalf of Kam Do Bakery, presenting one ton of pineapple buns to Pathways Clubhouse as a practical act of support for the community and those in need. The donation was received by Program Director Ms. Laura Clarke, and photos were taken to commemorate the occasion.
After the donation ceremony, the organizers arranged an interactive game, inviting guests to estimate how many pineapple buns could be made from one metric ton of flour. The game was hosted by Mr. William Tse, Director and Secretary-General of the Association. The organizers explained that one metric ton equals 1,000 kilograms. While a typical pineapple bun on the market weighs about 60 grams, the pineapple buns made by Kam Do Bakery are more generously portioned and weigh over 100 grams each, giving guests a clearer idea of the scale of food production and donation.
To ensure fairness, the correct answer had been written on paper in advance and sealed in an envelope, which was held for safekeeping by Mr. Paul Vincent L. Uy, Deputy Consul General of the Philippine Consulate General. The organizers also reminded employees of Kam Do Bakery and their family members not to participate in the game, allowing guests at the venue to enjoy the guessing activity together. The Secretary-General later gave a hint that the answer was between 5,000 and 10,000 buns. Guests responded enthusiastically, raising their hands to participate, and the atmosphere was relaxed and joyful.
The correct answer was finally revealed to be 7,140 pineapple buns. The answer was correctly guessed by Burnaby City Councillor Mr. Richard Lee. The organizers then presented Mr. Lee with a pure-gold keychain sponsored by Chow Tai Fook as the prize, adding a joyful, interactive, and festive touch to the evening.
During the event, Mr. Sunny Ho, President of the Richmond Merchants Association, and Mr. Gen Wong, Executive Director and Spokesperson, delivered joint remarks. On behalf of the Association, they warmly welcomed all guests and friends to the gathering.
The two representatives said that the Richmond Merchants Association was pleased and honoured to take part in this meaningful event with guests and community friends. They noted that the gathering was not only an Association event, but also a gathering for the team, the business community, and the wider Richmond community.
The Association also took the opportunity to introduce the work it is currently advancing. Its main work is to help members develop their businesses while also encouraging members to give back to society and contribute to the community.
The Association's representatives stated that doing business is not only about making a profit; it is also a responsibility, a commitment, and a contribution to society. The Richmond Merchants Association hopes to continue listening to the voices of the community and to give more people the opportunity to share their thoughts and stories. Most importantly, the Association does not wish to remain at the level of slogans, but to take concrete action and do things well.
As for how to contribute to the community, the two representatives said the answer is simple: take practical action. Kam Do Bakery is an example of giving back to the community in a sincere, practical, and meaningful way.
The Richmond Merchants Association hopes that through this gathering, filled with love, cultural exchange, and community spirit, further understanding, connection, and cooperation among different communities can be promoted.
Mr. Paul Vincent L. Uy, Deputy Consul General of the Philippine Consulate General, delivered remarks thanking the Richmond Merchants Association for the invitation and recognizing the active and long-standing cooperative relationship between the Philippine Consulate General and the Association. She recognized the Association's long-standing efforts to support local businesses, serve its members, and promote harmony in the Richmond community.
Ms. Lau noted that although the atmosphere at the event was relaxed and joyful, the promotion of business development remains equally important for a chamber of commerce. She said that, amid a complex global environment and uncertainty arising from international conflicts, Hong Kong remains an important business platform worth considering. With resilience, vision, and competitiveness, Hong Kong continues to serve as an important hub for global enterprises.
She further stated that Hong Kong and Canada have maintained long-standing and comprehensive economic and trade relations, as well as deep people-to-people ties. She welcomed Canadian businesses to seize opportunities in Hong Kong and use Hong Kong as a platform to further expand into the Greater Bay Area and the Asia-Pacific market.
Ms. Lau said she looked forward to strengthening cooperation with the Richmond Merchants Association and other chambers of commerce in the future, promoting economic development and business ties between the two places. She also wished the Richmond Merchants Association continued success in the year ahead.
In his remarks, Mr. Don Davies, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway, said he was very pleased to attend the event and to join guests from various sectors in recognizing the Richmond Merchants Association's many years of work and contributions.
Mr. Davies said the gala dinner was an important opportunity for the community to recognize the significant contributions made by local businesses in Richmond, the Lower Mainland, and British Columbia. He noted that a strong economy and a strong community are closely connected. The success of local businesses not only drives economic growth and creates employment opportunities, but also helps strengthen Canada's social cohesion.
He mentioned that since its establishment in 2017, the Richmond Merchants Association has played an important role in promoting cooperation, strengthening connections, and supporting community prosperity. He also shared that he had served for more than 15 years as an executive member of the Canada-China Legislative Association for the New Democratic Party and had also served as the NDP Finance Critic. He has long supported constructive exchanges between Canada and China, as well as closer economic, trade, and cultural ties. He emphasized that promoting cooperation, inclusion, and leadership at both the local and international levels is particularly important for building a better future.
Finally, on behalf of his parliamentary colleagues, Mr. Davies congratulated the Richmond Merchants Association on its achievements over the past nine years, and wished the Association continued prosperity and growth, and all guests good health and success in their careers.
Mr. Chak Au, Member of Parliament for Richmond Centre-Marpole, delivered remarks. He said he was honoured to be invited to attend this important event and shared that he had witnessed the establishment of the Richmond Merchants Association nine years ago. Over the years, he has personally witnessed the efforts of the Association's members and board to serve business people in Richmond and beyond, as well as their positive achievements in promoting business development and strengthening community connections.
Mr. Au said the Richmond Merchants Association not only actively promotes local and international business exchanges in Canada, but also cares about community needs and gives back to society through practical action. He specifically mentioned the Association's donation to Pathways Clubhouse during the event, saying that it demonstrated the Association's spirit of caring for the community and supporting those in need, and deserved recognition and praise.
He also remarked in a lighthearted and humorous way that he originally thought the event would simply be a chamber of commerce event, but after entering the venue he felt a lively and warm atmosphere, almost resembling the joy of a wedding. This reflected the creativity and vitality of the Richmond Merchants Association. He noted that business development requires new thinking, new ideas, and creativity, and that the Association's work over the past nine years has fully demonstrated this positive and forward-looking spirit.
Mr. Au further said that over the years, the Richmond Merchants Association has not only served the local Richmond and Canadian business communities, but has also actively promoted business exchanges with places such as Vietnam, expanding opportunities for cooperation. He once again thanked the Association for its many years of contributions to the business community and the wider community, and wished all guests good health, prosperous careers, and happy lives.
Mr. George Chow, Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for Vancouver-Fraserview, delivered remarks. He said he was very pleased to attend the Richmond Merchants Association's Ninth Gala Dinner and extended warm congratulations to the Association.
Mr. Chow noted that for many years, the Richmond Merchants Association has worked hard to create opportunities for merchants in Richmond and other areas, allowing members to build connections, share ideas, and cooperate with one another, thereby promoting business growth and community development.
He also mentioned that the Richmond Merchants Association's current British Columbia-China Trade Delegation project is very timely, especially as the Premier of British Columbia is about to visit China. Such work will help British Columbia expand diversified trade markets and further strengthen the province's economic development.
In addition, Mr. Chow said he was deeply moved by the presentation from Pathways Clubhouse. He noted that the Clubhouse's work in helping members reintegrate into society and economic life is highly meaningful. Work is not only a source of income, but also allows a person to feel that they are part of the economy and the community. Therefore, he highly commended the Richmond Merchants Association's support for Pathways Clubhouse and its actions in promoting community care.
Richmond City Councillors Ms. Alexa Loo and Mr. Andy Hobbs delivered remarks on behalf of the City of Richmond, extending congratulations to the Richmond Merchants Association on its Ninth Gala Dinner.
Ms. Loo said she was very pleased and honoured to participate in the gala dinner. She noted that the City of Richmond has always valued and supported local business development, and thanked the Association for its many years of work for the Richmond community, including supporting local businesses, caring for the community, and supporting Pathways Clubhouse through this event.
She specifically mentioned that through food, employment opportunities, community connections, and other means, the Richmond Merchants Association helps people in need rebuild confidence and brings the community together, demonstrating the spirit of the business community giving back to society.
Ms. Loo also shared her family story, mentioning that her grandfather came to Canada from Guangdong and opened a restaurant in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She said that, like many immigrant business owners, he served the community through food, brought people together, and worked hard to support his family and care for others. This spirit of mutual support and giving back to the community is an important force that makes Richmond a better place.
Finally, she thanked the Richmond Merchants Association for its many years of contributions to the business community and the wider community, and recognized the Association's efforts in promoting community connections, supporting those in need, and building a better Richmond.
Burnaby City Councillors Mr. Richard Lee and Mr. James Wang also delivered remarks, extending congratulations on behalf of the City of Burnaby to the Richmond Merchants Association on its Ninth Gala Dinner.
Mr. Lee said he was very pleased to attend the event with his colleague Mr. James Wang, and congratulated the Association on successfully holding its Ninth Gala Dinner. He also thanked the Association for its support and donation to Pathways Clubhouse, saying that this fully demonstrated the Association's spirit of caring for society and giving back to the community.
Mr. Wang said that over the past nine years, the Richmond Merchants Association has been committed to promoting business development, strengthening business connections, and actively advancing economic and trade exchange work, including the British Columbia-China Trade Delegation project. These achievements deserve recognition. He noted that although the Association is rooted in Richmond, a strong merchant network has a positive impact on the entire Lower Mainland region.
He further stated that the City of Burnaby also values regional economic development and believes that cross-city cooperation and strong partnerships with the local business community are very important for driving economic growth. To this end, the City of Burnaby has in recent years established the Mayor's Task Force on Economic Growth and Resilience to study practical and feasible strategies to help entrepreneurs and local merchants develop more effectively. Mr. Richard Lee and Mr. James Wang are also involved in the work of this task force.
Finally, the two Burnaby City Councillors once again congratulated the Richmond Merchants Association on its achievements over the past nine years and wished the Association continued prosperity and development as it promotes more business exchange, regional cooperation, and shared prosperity.
During the event, the organizers presented guests with red gift boxes containing Kam Do Bakery's signature wife cakes. As a well-known local bakery, Kam Do Bakery's traditional Chinese pastries are deeply loved by the community. Through this gesture, the organizers shared the distinctive products of a local merchant with guests while also demonstrating the spirit of Richmond's business community in giving back and bringing people together.
Another highlight of the event was the stage play "Ho-Kam Wedding," jointly performed by the staff of Kam Do Bakery and Chow Tai Fook. The performance, themed around traditional wedding customs blending Chinese and Korean cultural elements, told a love story between a Chinese man and a Korean woman. In a relaxed and lively atmosphere, it allowed guests to learn about family values, blessings, gratitude, and heritage within Asian wedding culture.
The performance began with Mr. Sunny Ho, President of the Richmond Merchants Association, leading the team in Korean and Chinese dance performances, opening the stage play to an enthusiastic atmosphere and continuous applause.
The stage play first presented the traditional rituals of marriage proposal and bridal escort. According to tradition, before welcoming the bride, the groom must express sincerity to the bride's parents and receive the family's blessing. In the performance, a matchmaker led the bridal escort party onto the stage, symbolizing communication, coordination, and blessings between the two families. The groom and groomsmen carried gifts, gold jewelry, and red envelopes, representing sincerity, celebration, and respect for the bride's family.
The performance also recreated the common "door-opening" segment of the bridal escort process. Through interaction, games, red envelopes, and other gestures, the groom and groomsmen expressed sincerity to the bride's side and successfully welcomed the bride out. The bride then appeared escorted under a red umbrella. Red symbolizes celebration and blessings, while the red umbrella also represents the bride being protected and cared for by the groom from that point forward.
The organizers then arranged a tea ceremony, demonstrating the important Asian tradition of respecting elders and thanking parents for their upbringing. The bride and groom served tea to both families' parents and elders to express gratitude and blessings. After drinking the tea, the elders gave red envelopes or gold jewelry in return, symbolizing their formal acceptance of the couple into the family and offering wishes for a happy and long-lasting marriage.
Through the "Ho-Kam Wedding" stage play, the event not only showcased the exchange and shared values between Chinese and Korean cultures, but also allowed guests to feel the importance of family, gratitude, respect for elders, and community connection, adding a warm and culturally meaningful scene to the gala dinner.
